Pain of Loss

We have all experienced loss. Whether it be the loss of a pet, the loss of a friend, the loss of a relationship, loved one, sibling, or parent. Just to name a few. We have all at some point in our lives – or we will all, at some point in our lives experience loss.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the day our nation experienced loss in a shocking and dreadful moment. Today as I sit quietly in my living room I can’t help but think about the families who feel an empty place where their loved one used to be. I wonder how they are doing, how they have coped. How many have walked a daughter down the aisle alone, how many graduations, celebrations, family reunions, and funerals have been attended without the presence of their loved one. The pain of loss is one that doesn’t ever go away and seems to be magnified from time to time.

Today as I sit here reading about God’s grace these lyrics come to mind.

When my world is shaking
Heaven stands
When my heart is breaking
I never leave Your hands

Such a beautiful song by JJ Heller, such a wonderful promise in Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

As the month of September comes and goes there are so many who feel the weight of loss come crushing down on them. Though I did not feel the sting of loss on September 11, 2001 in a personal way, there are days within this month that have forever left their mark on me. So, as the days pass I will look to October for a new hope.

Hug your loved ones today and rest in their presence.
