Perfect Love

Today I started a new devotional, this is a devotional that my future husband and I are doing together. It’s well put together in that, it gives us each five days of personal growth in the Lord with a sixth day to come together and discuss the studies of the past week.

This week we are talking about love, God’s love.

So often I find myself reading scripture and not really thinking about what it means.
If you have opportunity I encourage you to read the following scriptures:
John 15: 9-10,
1 John 3:1 and also 1 John 3:16
1 John 4:7-21.

I haven’t had very many relationships throughout my life, but in the relationships that I have had, there has always been a certain amount… or a large amount of insecurity and concern over whether or not the relationship was going to be severed if I didn’t live up to some invisible expectation. In essence, my partner has held our relationship as a weapon against me. For far too many years I responded just exactly the way I was expected to, I responded in fear.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1John 4:18

God is perfect love.

The security I have in the knowledge of God’s unconditional love is difficult to describe, my Heavenly Father knows me, He knows my thoughts, my intentions, my weaknesses, and my strength. He knows my successes and He knows my failures. But most of all, he knows my heart and though at times I make poor choices I have the confidence in knowing that He loves me enough to draw me back to His will and His path. This is unconditional love, this is the kind of love that brings peace and security. This is true love.

In 1 John 4:9-21 scripture talks about God’s love and how the depth of God’s love was shown when He sent His Son to die for us. God loved us and sent his Son so we can be vessels of His love to others, in this way love is made complete. True love casts out fear, fear hinders the ability to truly love because love comes then from concern over punishment instead of peace and confidence. When we love as Christ loves us we drive out fear.

1John 3:16 This is how we know what love is, Jesus Christ laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

Be a vessel of God’s love.
