Eternity in my Heart

God placed Eternity in our hearts.

Remember the movie the Highlander? I think it came out in the 1980’s it was about people who had the (mis)fortune of living forever. They could face illness, attack, disaster, whatever came their way, but as long as their head remained attached to their bodies they would live forever. The catch was, in order to become stronger, they had to kill other immortals and receive their power.

Really, the premise of the movie is kind of absurd but the story itself brings about the recognition that we want to prolong our lives as long as possible. Think about it, all throughout history, people traveled for miles to visit the healing wells, the fountain of youth, to search for the holy grail, among other things, all in the hopes that it would make them live longer or even forever.

God put ETERNITY in our hearts. It is when we are not focused on Him and the promise of heaven that we begin to hope in a life here on earth. Yes, I want to live a long fulfilling life here with my family and loved ones, I am not longing to go in a way that hopes it will be soon. But I am longing for heaven. God placed Eternity in my heart and He has given us a command as well as a desire to share the truth of eternity and the promise of forever with those around us.

Life is fleeting and true rewards are few, but the promise of heaven, eternal life with our creator and our loved ones who have gone before, is a truth that brings excitement beyond words.

Ecclesiastes 2:11-14 He has made everything beautiful in its time. he has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his toil; this is a gift from God. I know that everything God does will endure forever, nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it.
